A small village on the coast

Casal Velino is a charming vacation resort on the Mediterranean coast in the heart of the Cilento national park next to the historical excavation places of Velia.

The mass tourism has spared Casal Velino so that it has kept much of its original charm. Today the main places are the picturesque Casal Velino Paese high above the valley and the beach resort Marina di Casal Velino at the seven kilometres long sandy beach.

In both places, everything is a walking or biking distance. There are several cafés, bars and restaurants on the Seaside and around the central Piazza.

On the countryside, people are generally involved in agriculture and forestry, which allows the visitor to eat tomatoes, eggplants, and zucchini that taste as such. Once a week the farmers and traders offer their products on the large market.

In the area of San Mateo , there is the small chapel that in the middle age kept the rests of Apostle Mathew. These can be seen nowadays in the dome of Salemo. The Vatican has put S. Mateo on the list of pilgrim places.

From Rome and Naples there are trains almost every hour. You can check the train schedule on the website of the Italian railway company.

Car

Probably the best way to visit the area is to rent a car, stay at our premises (!) and drive around. One of the reasons why Cilento is one of Italy's best-kept secrets is that it has always been difficult to reach it by car. Nowadays, things are much better.

From Naples , take the A3 highway Salerno-Reggio Calabria. Exit at Battipaglia and then take the SS 18 direction Agropoli-Vallo della Lucania, exit to Vallo Scalo, then drive on to Casal Velino Marina.

For further details, see www.googlemaps.com .

The distance from Naples is 150 km. and you can reach Cilento in about 2 hours, unless you stop on the way to see how mozzarella is made and spend a couple of extra-hours eating mozzarella, home-made yogurt, etc.
